Activating The X3 Script Editor / Galaxy Editor

Post by Burianek » Sat, 29. Oct 05, 22:03

Thread unstickied, info merged into the Tutorials stickie for housekeeping purposes.

The Script Editor

The script editor in X3 is largely unchanged from X2, with the exception of many new useful commands that have been added. Also the way to activate the script editor has changed slightly to be a bit more easy.

The script editor aka "Manual Ship Computer Interface" (M.S.C.I.) is an in-game tool to create/modify AI behaviour rules and also allows creating/modifying objects in the game universe.
These features mean it is very powerful and when not used carefully can seriously damage your game universe.
As many of you have already found out using the Script Editor can spoil all the fun of the game!

Please note that this powerful tool is provided for your use as is. Script writing and accompanied problems are NOT supported by Egosoft or any betatesters.

If you are certain that you want to use this unsupported feature, you may activate the script editor the following way in your game:
  • enter the menu to change your pilot's name
type Thereshallbewings (note the capital T) and press enter
the menu will close, your player name will NOT have been changed, and a confirmation beep will sound on correct activation
you will now find the "Script Editor" menu item in the command console
Note that the publication of the Script Editor access code by no means forces you to use it. The editor is an advanced and most importantly optional feature.
If you are not into script programming of any sort you are probably better off without it.

****Note****
Once opened the script editor can never be closed in your save game, A new start is required
99.9% of script & mod users care not about this but some of you may do.

The Galaxy Editor

The Galaxy Editor is an in game tool that allows you to create your own maps for the X-Universe. It has undergone significant development since X2, and should be much more powerful than before.

There is no documentation for this feature, and use remains unsupported by Egosoft.

If you are certain that you want to use this unsupported feature you may activate the galaxy editor the following way in your game:
  • enter the menu to change your pilot's name
type Makeanapplepiefromscratch (note the capital M) and press enter
the menu will close, your player name will NOT have been changed, and a confirmation beep will sound on correct activation
you will now find the "Galaxy Editor" menu item in the 'NEW GAME' section of the opening menu of the game
Note that the publication of the Galaxy Editor access code by no means forces you to use it. The editor is an advanced and most importantly optional feature.

Feel free to ask questions about the activation of the script editor / galaxy editor in this thread, but please save questions like 'How does it work?' and 'How do I script something?' for the appropriate tutorials threads. (Don't post them here)

ok, hopefully i am not about to make a complete idiot of myself by posting something somebody else has already posted, but i am posting it here in this sticky for everyone to see

HOW TO GET INTO THE SCRIPT EDITOR

ok, first things first, dock at a station, we don't want you to get blown up by a passing pirate.

go along the the furthest left menu option, more commonly known as "personnel"

now choose the furthest left again labeled "pilot"

ok, welcome to the main pilot area, shiny isn't it, anyway.

choose the "rename..." option on the far right and rename to
"Thereshallbewings" main problem here is the ll on shall, you need to type it slowly, also check the capital T

when pressing enter the game will hang for a second and you shall be returned to the "pilot" menu and your name shall be the same as before, if not please check your spelling or press escape to get back, you should also hear some random sound, i never but then again i'm deaf.

ok, to access the script editor it's an easy step

on the "pilot" menu (where you renamed) select "Global commands" the far left option and all the above being done properly... you should see the option at the top of the list for the script editor, ENJOY!!!

ok, quick rundown

1. dock
2. personnel
3. pilot
4. rename...
5. rename to "Thereshallbewings"
6. Global commands
7. Script editor

happy editing!

Doesn't work for me and I've followed your instructions to the very letter. Repeatedly.

I do have a pilot named Thereshallbewings though.

check to make sure you have a double l
the new typing system makes it difficult to get repeat letters unless you type very slow and deliberately.

Problem solved. It doesn't work if you are docked.

Actually it does work if you are docked. At least, it did for me, on a couple of different occasions. (You weren't making the same mistake that I made first and changing the ship name were you by any chance...?)

Cheers,

Rob.

No. I guess like everything else associated with x3, the feature is, shall we say, 'capricious'. I tried over two days to get the docked one working yet managed first time when not docked.

No quotes.
Make sure you have a double l in "shall", as X3 likes to limit repeat keys.

You might need to save, exit and load it up again for the changes to take affect.

wow, people actually read my post, i'm impressed, and surprised, specially that it never worked when docked...

oh, i only put the dock bit in because while i was trying to enable it my first time i kinda got... whats the phrase, ah yes... ganked, 3 M3 fighters attacked me and blew me up before i could run away, i liked that freighter too :'(

ah well, strange things happen. as for the AL thing, i installed each file into the correct folders started a game up with the script editor enabled and it works.

a little too well i think, get a request every 5-10 minutes, which is annoying when i am in my station AFK letting my ships do it all for me.

Won't work for me either inside or outside a station. Game hangs for a second but nothing happens and when I press enter again it changes the name to Thereshallbewings.
