New Star Wars Ships
Hi, first time poster, i'm extremely appreciative of these forums, so thanks in advance.
I've had the X-bug for some time now, and i've been looking for good models to add to the game. I've discovered that an old mod for 'Homeworld' called 'New Rebellion' (i don't think it's available anymore) has models that can be easily converted to 3ds and added to X2. These models come complete with textures that are only slighty less detailed that standard X2 models. All ship models for the original Homeworld game can be added to X2/3.
After playing about with Gmax for a while, i've been able to put a TIE Fighter into the game, although i'm still to texture it, and properly put in a cockpit and guns. I'm still low down on the GMax learning-curve, but rising fast.
You can see a pic of it here- http://img75.imageshack.us/my.php?image ... n30je8.jpg
There are a total of 40-50 ships that are available to be added, from fighters to frigates to cap-ships, and two monster-ships. Over the next few weeks, i hope to mod at least the best ones into X2. If anyone else is interested, you can find the mod here-
http://jstonline.homeworldarchives.com/ ... warsnr.htm
You can find loads more mods (BSG, B5, SW, ST etc) on that site, that could be used to rip models out of. I'm also wondering if weapon/sound effects can also be extracted. You have to use a program called 3D Explorer to convert the peo file to 3ds and the LiF textures to jpg.
I'd also like to point out that the game 'Empire at War' has a plug-in available that lets you extract the ship models to 3ds Max. They're damn fine models, and would look great in X3. If i don't burn out first, i'll get a trial-version of 3ds 7 and convert them for use in Gmax too.
What i'd really, really like to see is a mod for X2/3 that introduces star wars ships and weapon/handling configurations in line with the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter games. A redrawn galactic map would be even better. Although i have a horrible tendency not to finish what i start, if i keep at it that's what i would like to achieve. Jumping into a rebel sector and scrambling the TIEs from your star destroyer to dogfight X-Wings is just soo damn cool.
Although i have X3, it's too slow on my computer for me to play it on a larger scale. I'm happier with a fully-featured X2 than a crippled X3. Somehow, taking apart games and putting them back together is so much more fun than playing them.

Re: New Star Wars Ships
Im glad that you are into modding, and exploring what you can do changing game enviroments Its very fun sometimes. it also can be very frustraiting, and time consuming. The results if you stick with it are well worth the efforts you put in.CorSec Authority wrote: http://jstonline.homeworldarchives.com/ ... warsnr.htm

However.. You should consider what you just wrote up there VERY carefully. You see I was one of the modelers for the Star Trek mods for HW (look up the credits). I still have contacts from the old school HW community including the SWNR mod. I do not think they would appreciate the "Ripping" of thier work. I know i wouldnt. I would expect some form contact 1st to ask if my work could be used in a mod. The team that built the mod put in alot of hours of thier own free time to make those models you just condoned the "ripping" of from scratch. Last i checked the gaming union forums were still up and running. Post on there about what you are doing before you do this. HW models may be outdated now, but still show some appreciation for the efforts made for those mods. Ask permission to use other modders work. If you cant contact them assume the answer is no. Theres nothing stopping you from doing your own personal thing. just dont release it for download untill u get permissions. You will be glad you did.

Do you two want to know the REALLY good part?
Even if he gets the models from the Homeworld Mods, his work is still cut out for him. He's got to do model surgery, break them down, and alter them to function and be read by X2's format. (.bod and .bob format.) As well as set hardpoint locations on the model correctly. I haven't even been able to do that and I made Terradine.

TheStressPuppy, thanks for the heads-up. I'll be sure to get an OK before i do anything more than for personal use. If you can use your old-school contacts to let me know who to talk to, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Well, i've got the cockpits and turrets working, and next i'll try to work out the textures. Once i've got my first ship done, i'll post a screenie. I'm really starting to get my feet now. AdmiralTigerclaw, didn't you add extra weapon hardpoints to the ISD in Terradine?
I do have a question though. Using deadlyda's method of creating custom cockpits, ie linking the cockpit to a new object called 'Cockpit', can this be done with hangars and engines too? I don't want to have to use pre-existing parts unless i have to.

I actually didn't do the ship work, Deadly did all that and I did a bit of copy and paste work with careful instructions.
What I HAVE done however is make a few models in 3DS Max of ships I want to add... Plus a few sketches of fighters I've come up with... Think you'd be interested? Like I said, I haven't been able to get turrets and such working.

I was a little harsh with you on my post above, and i apologise for that. Most up, and comming modders use other mods as examples, or guides to learn how to do things for themselves. It wasnt my intention to dissuade you from modding. It was just to make you aware that some people get angry if you use thier work without thier knowledge. I was a bad choice of words on my part.
All the contact info you need should be here http://www.thegamingunion.co.uk/forums/ ... y.php?f=49 Also check the readme's of the the SWNR mod. It should have the e-mail addys of all the model authors. Zeelich is the main guy you want to contact. It looks like the mod is still being worked on to this day
If you have models in game, and some of the features you want working that IMO is one of the hardest parts of modding (next to making the models themselves). Keep it up, and i look foward to seeing what you accomplish.

Damm I wish I could have some of my GaGaren ships as a mod.
It's so annoying all I can really do is re-name other mods to be my ships but thats so impersonal I almost break down in sobs when I see "My" fleet.

I'd be happy to do what i can to put your models into the game. I'll PM you my e-mail address. You'll need to let me know how long (in in-game metres) you want your ships, as well as which parts you want to be used for guns etc. Also, where you want the cockpits and turrets to be. I'm still to experiment to get engines and hangars working properly though.
I just used the info on the forum, and some trial and error and deduction, but if it'd be helpful i can write a step-by-step guide of what i did.

Okay, I got you an Email sent as PMed to me. Anyway, if you need some Star Wars models with lower poly counts, I know exactly where to get some. It turns out that DarkSaber's OPT station has a ship addon pack for Xwing Alliance that has some really good old models. (I got the MC85a for deadly from it.)
These are however, all in OTP or OPT... WHATEVER.... format and require something of an old converter.
These models are older, but extremely good, so their poly counts will be nice and low.
Let me know if you want me to dig up a link.
