From Nerd to Hero Chapter 1
I have not visited the forum for quite some time but X3 and very few commitments in my life has brought me back again. My last visits here were in the good old days of 2000 when the forums were a hive of fun and laughter. They have certainly become more modern and busier now. Still full of good sportsmanship I must say. I can see a few names I remember from back then, like commander Jamieson, Steel and adamski. Promoted to Moderators too I see!
Many stories were written for the forum, one by myself about many of the regulars with the help of Steel who gave me loads of info. Not sure what ever happened to that story. I know The Commander of the SAS had it on his website for a few years. It would be nice to read it again one day to bring back a few memories. I never did write the final chapter which would have been the mother of all battles with a joint attack by the SAS and the TTS (Teladi Terror Squad). I don't have it anymore after many new PC's and HD formats.
I have been back to the forums the last couple of weeks, mainly browsing which has inspired me to produce a mod for X3 and even more impressed with the stories in this forum I am now writing a new story and would like some feedback if possible from the experts around here.
This is chapter one, although it is not shaped the way I would like yet, but I think the content is there for a great adventure. Some of it is based on my own adventures in X3 and will also include parts of the mod (new sectors). My hope is to produce a good story then make the flying experience to go with it. Not sure if I got the jazuras and tazuras the right way around! My interpretation is Mizura = minute, stazura = hour, tazura = day and jazura = year. Not sure about week yet.
Anyway here goes:

Chapter 1
I had just energized and stored the last energy cell of the shift when my father called out for me, “Kriss, it is time to go, we don’t want to be late for the meeting tonight”. Even though the last 8 stazuras had been very tiring, I was keen to get into my flying suit and meet my father in the docking bay.
My name is Kriss Sheran; I work at the Solar Power Plant Alpha in Power Circle with my Father. My Father has worked at this station for the last 27 jazuras, which is almost 9 jazuras before I was born. Even though my father wanted me to complete my studies, life in our family has been difficult since the death of my mother 3 jazuras ago now. My father always blamed him self for her death. They were both travelling on holiday in our old Buster, taking in the sights of Siezewell. On their way home they were attacked by Pirates and within a few mizuras, were left burning in space. If it was not for the quick reaction of the local Teladi Police Force they would have both been killed. An ambulance craft rushed both my mother and father to the local infirmary, but for my mother it was too late, she died before they could receive any treatment.
Since that day my father has kept very busy working at the power plant. Every tazura, we follow the same routine, leaving for the plant, working a full shift then stopping at the evening college for our lectures on space phenomenon. He often lets me pilot the Buster to the college, but tonight he wanted to pilot the fighter himself for some strange reason. Keeping busy and studying in the evenings was the only way to keep my fathers mind off my mother’s death and my mind on the future. Days were long and evenings short, but we managed to keep each other in check. I really wanted more from life by studying the stars and travelling to far away sectors. My enthusiasm was growing every tazura, which is why I put away as many credits as I could. I had saved just over 65,000 credits, enough to pay the taxi fare to Argon Prime and buy my own ship.
As we neared the college in Antigone’s memorial I gazed around at the sector wondering what life was like on the other side of the jump gate to the south. My travelling experience had taken me as far as this college and two jazuras ago, just before I started work; I visited Three Worlds on a delivery run with my father. I had been brought up to believe that anywhere outside our home sector was dangerous. The news stories did not put me off at all; hearing of Julian Brennan’s heroic fight in a place called Heretics End inspired me to visit one day. Surely since the alien invasion then the huge battle that wiped out the invaders meant the galaxy was safer?
I had studied a few maps at the college so knew a little about life in Boron space and slightly less about Teladi space from my father’s experiences. My dream of visiting far off sectors was getting closer. If my father knew he would certainly try to stop me but tonight after our visit to the college was my chance to set off on my dream trip. My father was sending me home in a taxi while he visited my uncle in Ringo Moon. His instructions were for me to go to work and to expect him back in two tazuras. I knew he would check up on me when he got to my uncle’s the next tazura.
When the lecture finished I waved off my father as he sped off in his Buster Fighter. The taxi was waiting for me at docking bay 4, so I hurried not to miss the opportunity as taxi pilots in this sector were notorious for picking up other customers and leaving you stranded. Time is credits as they always say. I climbed into the taxi and we sped off for the west gate. I asked the pilot to divert to Argon Prime Shipyard. The journey was worth more credits to the pilot so as I suspected he turned sharply at high speed toward the south gate.
My first sight of Herron’s Nebula was a spectacle. I had heard this sector was famous for that evil whisky my father likes so much. Heading past many navigation beacons, we entered Argon Prime through the south gate. I had never seen such a busy sector! I always thought Antigone’s Memorial was crowded but not compared to the busy trade lanes and many huge transports all around us. In the distance I could see a large destroyer escorted by many fighters. This must be the Titan class destroyer I had read about. I really wanted to see Argon One but I just could not make much out with all the space traffic.
As we neared the Shipyard, suddenly my heart began pounding at the thought of being all alone in Argon Prime. It seemed the only friend I had was the pilot, even though he had not uttered a word all the way here! I had to pay the taxi pilot 4,200 credits for the trip before he sped off again with a new fare. This left me with the remainder of my savings, 61,000 credits. I moved into the hall of the shipyard and walked around the deck where there were many ships on display. There were Heavy Nova fighters, Busters, freighters and the one ship I knew I could afford was a new discoverer. Immediately I moved to the sales office and settled payment for my very own light fighter, the ship that will take me to places I could only imagine in my dreams until now!
I climbed into my new ship and buckled up. Checking the ship over, I logged into the onboard computer. It was the same model my father had on his Buster, so I was very familiar with the keys. I checked the list of ship instalments, noticing my 1 MW shield was charged up, but did not have any lasers to fire. The total cost of this ship was 59,000 credits. I still had enough money to pick up some hardware at the equipment dock before embarking on my journey. Once at the equipment dock I added a boost extension and a little engine tuning. This should help me run from any danger at a speed of 593.4. With 800 credits left I decided to move off into space and head east. I was not entirely sure that east was the right way but my senses told me the best sights would be east, far away from here, to the opposite side of the galaxy from my whole boring life’s existence.

Thank you biggie1447, it is good to be back
Shame about Commander Jamieson. I must have thought CBJ was the commander but I think CBJ was also around then. There was a Chris J.
Quite a few others I cannot remember. They formed a squad and the name escapes me. They were in my story as a mercenary bunch of about six regular visitors. Mad as hatters they were and great fun

Not a bad start, i am left wondering what is going to be found east.

I never realised it was all in the manual
Thank you for the info DIGSIN, I am sure it will be valuable to other writers too. I now have a saved copy of this info.
Never realised it was in the X2 manual. I just loaned my box set including XGold to a friend to try and get him hooked on the game. Although to my reckoning I should get them back in a couple of jazuras
I think I had better correct the first paragraph as I have the poor man working 33 hour shifts!
