Having trouble getting 3ds Max to open and Display textures on imported ships

Post by PALADIN245 » Mon, 21. Jun 10, 12:46

Having trouble getting 3ds Max to open and Display textures on imported ships.

My Setup
I'm running Windows 7 x64 with 3ds Max 2010 32Bit and DBOX2 v1.11

What i did
i started 3ds
then i clicked to utilities rolout
clicked maxscript
clicked on import [already have DBOX2 set up]
found my file in directory "C:\X3 Modding\ROOT Directory\objects\ships\argon\argon_M5_scene.bod"
and it loaded up like the pic below

PLEASE SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT MY NOOB PROBELM IS!

All i'm trying to do is import an Argon M5 to rip it's textures but the textures never show it is rather frustrating and i can't seem to fix it.
When i've imported the scene file it looks like this....

What i have tried...
1) reloading 3ds several times
2) used various versions of DBOX2
3) browsed and tried many things found on these forums

Anyone got any suggestions? Prob something simple i'm doin wrong.
also i have TeamVeiwer if anybody wants to use that to try to figure it out :)

p.s. sorry for realling big screenie. have no idea how to do much photo resizing or anything like that :)

Thanks i'll try that now....

EDIT 1:

Nope still no luck.....

This is all i get... any other ideas?
i extracted all the cats in a Dev directory as i showed earlier.... and i used X3TC v2.5 to do it....

still not sure as i wan'ted to import a M6 Argon to get the MAT6 textures from it but it displays with the same 'blankness' as the M5 does does anyone have a copy of the MAT6 Libarys i can put into my 3ds?

Did you try to render your scene? Sometimes you will get a "Missing externel files" screen and you can manually set the path to dds directory.
That may help.

yeah it came up with that......
and i set the path to my dds path......
but it still always came up "missing external components/files"

i'll try to recreate that again then i'll edit my post....

EDIT 1:
I have decided to format my comp and set it up for Dual Boot...
I'm gonna use XP for DEV and W7 for Games....
Maybe that will help i'll edit again when i'm done and checked 3ds again.

EDIT 2:
Loaded 3ds again and installed DBOX2 just waiting on X3TC to extract... [using TC version 2.7 if that helps any]

Scroll down about 1/3 on this page:

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=216693

There is a section on Modding, in particular applying textures, DDS file info, etc.

I found it very useful. If you follow the steps in:

http://www.box.net/shared/r351vngqo8

(Which should be "A Monkey's guide to adding ships to X3" by magrathean monkey)

You should see the textures you want.

Note that the most the of the modding headaches come from errors regarding File Locations and Pathnames. If some function can't find something, no worky and few clues...
This is my signature -

Current project: Get some Blake's 7 ships into X3:R and TC

That was my signature.

Thanks guys,

After several reinstalls of windows i managed to get it to read and use the textures, now i have the problem that the textures are really really tiny, they are not that tiny on the X3 ships yet on mine the visual scale of the textures is such that what would normally cover the side of a Dragon covers maybe 1/100th of my ships flank, even though the ships are the same size (around about).

Is there something simple that i need to do to fix this ?

And if not then would someone mind texturing a few models for me ?

Looking forward to your relpies guys !

textures are not automatically applied and stretched as you need.
you must now select your textured object and apply an UVW map (Menu > Modifiers > UV Coordinates) to select the type of mapping of the texture (planar, cilindrical, box...) then you must apply an UVW Xform, and you will be able to resize and move the texture to your likings.

Search google for 3ds max tutorials (or whatever 3d program you are using).

I tried this several times but i still can't get it to do what i wan't...

And i can't find a tutorial that shows you how to apply multiple materials to a single object...

Is there any way to apply a material to only a single face of an object ?
or does it have to be the entire object ?

NOTE:
I have designed my model in Inventor 2010 and then imported to 3DS max 2010, which means my actual model is comprised of only a single object, which inturn prevents me from just applying a meterial to each object as there is only ONE!
I am not proffecient at using 3DS as a modelling tool and i'm very new to texturing so i made the model in Inventor as i can use accurate measuremants to shape it how i want it.
Just thought that might be important for you guys to know as it may alter what your telling me quite drastically...

So yeah i need to apply multiple materials to the ONE object... anyway to do this so that they are all visible ?

Regards PALADIN245

p.s. I can upload the files for the hull if anyone wants to mess around and figure it out ?

convert the object into an editable mesh. then, select it.
from the right menu column, select the "modify" field, and in that field you can switch your selecting method between Vertex, edge, face, polygon and element (red icons)

select the "face" icon, and you will be able to select faces by clicking on them.

select all faces you want, and simply apply the material to them.

the material will now be applied only to the selected faces.

Note: you can also apply modifiers to the selected faces.
